by the President today. As reported on FOXnews.com, the President announced the nomination earlier today:
"Condoleezza Rice is already known to all Americans and to much of the world. During the last four years, I've relied on her counsel, benefited from her great experience and appreciated her sound and steady judgment, and now I'm honored she's agreed to serve in my Cabinet," Bush said at the White House in announcing her nomination.
Saying the secretary of state is "America's face to the world," Bush said the international community, in Rice, will see the "strength, grace and decency" of the United States.
Asking for quick Senate confirmation, Bush added: "The nation needs her."
I agree. I think she will do an excellent job and I do not think she will be the President's "yes" (wo)man, as some pundits have claimed - she is an extremely intelligent, capable woman, who certainly will be able to hold her own in the coming term.
Her biography is certainly impressive, beginning when she entered college at the age of 15, earning her bachelor's degree from the University of Denver, her master's degree from Notre Dame, and a Doctorate from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. She's written several books and was a distinguished, tenured professor at Stanford, earning numerous awards and distinctions, before being tapped by George HW Bush in 1989 to serve as the Director of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council. Her achievements are too numerous to detail, and, as she has in the past, she will serve the President well in this new position.
For the record, for those concerned about whether her credentials are up to snuff, you can compare her official biography to that of Madeline Albright. Two formidable women, indeed.
